Summer Decor

A Chocolate Indulgence

I came across these brownies on a lovely blog called Tecnicolor Kitchen. How great would they be at a desert party or just for an after work snack :)

Here's the recipe for you to enjoy!

10 tablespoons (140g/1 ¼ sticks) unsalted butter

1 ¼ (250g) cups sugar - I used vanilla sugar

¾ cup + 2 tablespoons (80g) unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)

¼ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 cold large eggs

½ cup (70g) all-purpose flour

2/3 cup (74g) walnut or pecan pieces (optional)

Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 160°C/325°F. Line the bottom and sides of a 20cm (8in) square baking pan with foil, leaving an overhang on two opposite sides. Butter the foil.

In a medium heatproof bowl, add the butter and set on top of a large sauce pan with barely simmering water. Melt the butter, then add sugar and salt, and stir until well combined. Next add the cocoa powder and stir until mixture is smooth and hot enough that you want to remove your finger fairly quickly after dipping it in to test. Remove the bowl from the skillet and set aside briefly until the mixture is only warm, not hot.
Stir in the vanilla with a wooden spoon. Add the eggs one at a time, stirring vigorously after each one. When the batter looks thick, shiny, and well blended, add the flour and stir until you cannot see it any longer, then beat vigorously for 40 strokes with the wooden spoon or a rubber spatula. Stir in the nuts, if using. Spread evenly in the lined pan.
Bake until a toothpick plunged into the center emerges slightly moist with batter, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely on a rack.
Lift up the ends of the parchment or foil liner, and transfer the brownies to a cutting board. Cut into 16 or 25 squares.

Chuck’s note on chocolate: any unsweetened natural or Dutch-process cocoa powder works well here. Natural cocoa produces brownies with more flavor complexity and lots of tart, fruity notes, which maybe more exciting for you. Dutch-process cocoa results in a darker brownie with a mellower, old-fashioned chocolate pudding flavor, pleasantly reminiscent of childhood.

Makes 16 large or 25 smaller brownies

Inspiration..It creeps up on us when we least expect it. For me, I get the majority of my inspiration from wonderful getaways. My favorites so far have been a trip to Hawaii, the British Virgin Islands and Paris. I love walking into new places, whether it be a gorgeous hotel, a beautiful beach or just a lovely flea market. I also love being inspired by talented designers like Proenza Schouler and Rodarte. Lately, I find myself being drawn towards very feminine colors and textures. I love anything that is romantic and sheer, or organic and floral. Today, I was inspired by the wonderful work of Victor and Rolf. There lingerie-inspired Spring/Summer 2010 Shoe Collection is so pretty and feminine! Oh how fun it is to be a girl :)

Getting Carried Away..

Cosmos, Manolo Blahniks and a girls night out are synonymous with the phenomenon that is Sex And The City. Never before has the unattached girl been so in demand. Today, all of the single ladies that don't have rings on it get to enjoy the good life with their best buds until their Mr. Big comes along. And of course, Sex and The City has definitely showed us just how fun that can be.

Last night I went to the Sex and the City 2 Premiere and After Party in Toronto. Not to worry- you won't find any spoilers here! But, I must say, the movie was great! The girls went on an exotic getaway to the beautiful Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emerites and according to Forbes, it is the richest city in the world. I also found out that the most expensive hotel ever built is located in Abu Dhabi. The Emirates Palace, built in 2005 is truly fit for a Queen. Each suite is furnished with gold and marble, there are over one thousand custom-made Swarovski crystal chandeliers and of course, you get your own butler to run your bath (for a few thousand dollars, you can have your tub filled with champagne).

Although the fashion in Sex and The City 2 was not nearly as glamorous as the first, the interior design definitely made up for it. Everything was spectacular, especially in Carrie and Big's apartment. It was filled with the most exquisite furnishings! The dark and sexy color palette mimicked the exotic decadence of Middle Eastern and Moroccan Living.

So all in all it was a really great movie. It wasn't necessarily the best plot but the aesthetics definitely made up for it! This movie is a definite must-see..What can possibly be more fun than watching our favorite four girls dish about love, guys and of course, the importance of friendship.

This past weekend I went up to my friends cottage on Lake Simcoe (just an hour outside of Toronto). Playing With Fire

Now that it's warm outside, why not throw yourself a Bon Fire? If you're anything like me and you live in a city, gathering logs from a forest and throwing them into a large pit might not be the easiest thing to do...but, you have other options! Why not use an outdoor fireplace? These days, there are so many styles, but ones that have caught my eye come from a Dutch company called Conmoto Design, known best for their modern outdoor furniture and accessories.
The coolest new product I found are portable 'hot-pots'. They look great on tables and can be used for Fondue and S'mores . The best part of all is that they're small enough to move from place to place; depending on where the night takes you.

Do you ever get the urge to just pack a bag and go somewhere?
Today I had that urge :) and as a result, I decided to book a last minute flight to NYC. My best friend Taryn lives there (she currently works as a personal shopper for the Chanel Department at Bergdorfs) and I thought it would be the perfect weekend to visit her and do some much needed Spring shopping (well it isn't so much needed as it is wanted). So off I go to New York this Friday, to shop, walk, and check out all the latest and greatest that the city has to offer. And stay tuned for pictures from the trip! Taryn already has things planned for us, including a Sunday brunch in Brooklyn followed by some vintage shopping.

To get into the New York spirit, I thought it would be fun to post some pics of the most expensive private residences in the city.

The first one is located in the Pierre Hotel (across from Central Park). For a very small (re: sarcasm) price tag of just $70 million dollars, this chateau in the sky could be yours. Keep in mind, this is the highest price ever listed for a city residence.

J.Crew is one of those stores I get majorly excited about at the start of each season. Come Winter, Fall, Summer and Spring, I find myself browsing their online catalogue, admiring all the new pieces and wishing that just maybe, I could look as well-put together as the J.Crew models.
Whether it's a chunky gold necklace strung together with a creme ribbon and pearls, or a floral pair of boyfriend shorts, J.Crew's look is always romantic and feminine; and that' why I love it so much.

One girl in particular, who embodies the J.Crew style to a T is Jenna Lyons- also known as J.Crew's amazingly talented Creative Director.

Why not have a whimsical tea party outside this Spring? Start off by finding a large navy blue table linen. If youcan't find one, you could go to a fabric store and have them cut you apiece large enough to touch the ground on all four sides.

Next, find yourself some wooden chairs..Head over to flea markets, vintage stores or garage sales. Having a mix of different styles (in the same finish) would also look great!

And to finish off the look we need umbrellas! Any pattern would work, just make sure to stick with one pattern!

Have fun with accessories! I love the idea of gathering a bunch of tin buckets and lining them up in a row along the middle of the table (each about four inches from the next). Fill them with blue berries or flowers to complete the look!

The Thompson Hotel

From New York to LA, Chicago to DC, the Thompson Hotel has made its mark on some of the hottest cities in North America. It's next stop: Toronto.

It's Friday! This means for the next two days, we can all lay around in our pyjamas and hang out with friends. I have had such a lucky week- acceptance into both interior design schools! I could not be happier right now! I am going to spend the weekend trying to decide which school to accept..So hard to choose!! Sheridan's program focuses strictly on Interior Design while OCAD's program focuses on 'the design of expressive and humane interior and architectural spaces (whatever that means haha). At the bottom of OCAD's acceptance letter was a message that read: "We hope that you choose to join us and give your imagination a chance to change the world." Reading it gave me shivers :)

I found a really cute blog the other day called butter plus cream. You should check it out. I want to try to make these homemade oreos..(they kinda look hard to make though!) Another great site is Food Gawker but I must warn you, do not look at this site on an empty stomach!

When I was younger I loved playing dress-up. I loved walking past the Disney store with my eyes wide open, seeing which new dresses were on display. I would ask my mom time and time again for early birthday presents, so that I could play princess in the latest and greatest Cinderella dress.

As I got older, I became more interested in Fashion. I would rummage through my moms old clothes hoping to find some vintage treasure. I remember my mom once telling me that my Grandmother took her to New York City (right after becoming engaged to my dad) and bought her a Lanvin dress. My eyes lit up...A vintage Lanvin!? Seriously!? To this day, I still think about what happened to that dress. We think it was either misplaced (or dare I say sold to a consignment store).

Now, when I clean out my closet, I always think about saving my favourite pieces (whether or not they are worn out) because one day, when I have a daughter, she might ask me for a vintage treasure.

Today, thanks to top designers like Marc Jacobs, Burberry and Phillip Lim, young girls no longer need tutus or Belle costumes. Today, they can look fabulous in the most adorable fashion get-ups, fit for a true princess.

Lately, I've been craving colour. Lots and lots of colour. I'm talking blues with fuschia's, greens with pinks and purples with teal-...my new motto: the more colour the better!

Mixing just the right amount of colour in any room adds a certain element of style and personality. Try not too worry too much about what does and does not go. If you want to mix pinks with reds or navy's with black- do so! And if that friend of yours (who always needs to put in her two cents) tells you that the pillows clash with the chair, all you have to do is just smile! What does she know anyways...Right!?

I love hotels. For me, they represent a luxurious space with all the amentities one needs to feel special. When you go to a hotel, you are completely taken care of. Whether it's your duvet cover being fluffed and folded at turndown or the comfy slippers tucked away neatly in your closet, hotels and their respective guest services make us feel happy, pampered and relaxed. Lately, a large emphasis has been placed on creating a certain look and vibe, turning these hotels into the new "it" place. These Starchitects and top Interior Designers ultimately use their golden touch to create excitement and grandeur within the space.

One of my favourite hotels in Miami right now is the W South Beach. Created by a team of legendary architects, designers and artists, the W Hotel represents the luxe Miami lifestyle craved by all.

Lately, I've gatherered some inspirational photos of rooms with framed prints hung on walls. I think this is a great look if you have prints (or family photos) that you'd like to share (rather than keeping them filed away on your computer or putting them in an album). The end result- a wall

that makes a definite statement.

Prints can be expensive. A great way to save money is to find images from the internet and have them printed out on quality paper at any photo store. Another great option is to use photos that you've taken on trips (pictures of streets, cafe's, architecture) and have them edited to black and white.

Royal Copenhagen, known best for its timeless porcelain products, has recently developed a new design concept for their Elements line. In a collaboration with Danish designer Louise Campbell, they have been able to successfully fuse the past with the present by reappropriating old designs and introducting a new vibrant pallete.

I'm so excited for Spring to arrive!

Now that we've had daylight savings, it really feels like any day now, the snow will melt, our coats will come off and the sun will be here to stay. I can't wait to just sit outside at an outdoor cafe or be able to go on long walks after dinner. What I'm really most excited for is having my iced vanilla latte without freezing my fingers off!

If you're thinking of ways to lighten up your rooms for this Spring, here are some inspirational photos to look at. A good way to change your "look" from season to season is to accessorize. Look for pillows, mirrors and frames that can warm up any room.

Whether you want to be glamourous, minimal or eccentric in your decorating, always remember to go for what looks right to you. If you love it then buy it! Mixing and matching is a great way to have some fun while also showing a little bit of your personality. Be bold. Dont be afraid to use colour- its your friend, I promise!

Everyone loves a party. I know I do. When I was in New York City, I was fortunate enough to work alongside some of todays top talents. Because I was doing an internship during the summer, most of our celebrations were weddings (although, we did throw a botox themed party for a new york socialite). When Spring comes along, I think about outdoor parties. I love the idea of gathering all of your friends for an afternoon lunch or late-night cocktail. How gorgeous would it be to throw a nautical themed party on the beach? All you Hamptoners out there, I envy your location!! I'm thinking everything would be deep navy blue and white; crisp, beachy and sophisticated.

I'd like to think of this as a party inspired by the fashion spreads of Ralph Lauren:

Every girl wants a fairytale ending.
We all hold onto that dream of one day having our very own happily ever after. You might still be waiting for your Prince Charming (maybe he thinks your still sleeping?) All I know is that everyone deserves their fairytale moment. You might not live in a castle and you might not have hair as long as Rapunzel's but you do deserve it and it will come.

Until then, why don't we pretend? I know of a place where the Sleeping Beauties lay and the John Smith's of our world sail across the Ocean blue.

It's not that we've had a bad winter....this actually might be one of the nicer winters I've ever witnessed. But regardless, there is nothing better than the changing of seasons; especially from winter to spring. What's better than the sounds of birds chirping? The trees becoming green? Or the sun staying out later than 5pm?

One of my favourite things about Spring are Spring Look books. This year, I am loving the florals, lace, and khaki look..I also like the idea of mixing masculine pieces with flirty feminine ones (for example: black military boots with a white lace dress and hair in a messy braid)

For those of you who love her films, you probably also love the houses her characters live in. Like so many of you, I walk away from each of her films wanting to live the life of her main characters mainly because, who wouldn't want to live in a breathtaking Hamptons Beach Home (Something's Gotta Give) or a charming cottage in Suri, England (The Holiday). For me, it all began with Father of The Bride. As a young girl, I would pause and rewind the first scene in the movie over and over again. Steve Martin drives his convertable down a gorgeous street, surrounded by beautiful green trees until he makes his way home. For many years, this was my dream home:

A few summers ago, I interned for an event planner in New York City called Sidekick Events. Ellen Kostman, founder of Sidekick Events, LLC http://www.sidekickevents.com/flash.html has created some of the most beautiful weddings in all of New York! It was so much fun spending my summer in the city and it was a great way to get a glimpse into the world of event design. One of my favourite parts of each event was seeing the floral arrangements. New York is home to some of the most talented florists in the world, including my personal favourite, Preston Bailey. His event decor is absolutely breathtaking but what I love most are his creative floral arrangements. Below are some fun creations he's made out of flowers. Take a look:

My friends and I love hosting dinner parties- especially ones that include cocktails, cupcakes and cameras (yes, we love taking pictures but who doesn't, right?). Our last dinner party was at Emily's house over the holidays. To get in the festive spirit, we all prepared our favourite dishes for a potluck soiree. Jenna and I both love to cook so we decided to team up together to make mini grilled cheese appetizers and a chocolate layer cake with white chocolate shavings for dessert. For our grilled cheeses, we used gorgeous mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese. We also included roasted red peppers and basil. They were delicious! Mini grilled cheeses are definite must-haves and best of all, they almost look to cute to eat! Whether you are making a Valentines Day dinner party for your best buds or a special night in with the man in your life, why not start off with everyone's favourite finger food!?

The sls hotel. Have you heard of it? I was in LA this past August and stumbled upon something very lovely. The sls (short for something lovely's started) is the newest hot spot to hit LA. Designed by award winning industrial designer Phillipe Starck, this hotel is as quirky and whimsical as it is luxurious. A definite must see. Good news: The SLS Hotel is set to open their second location in Miami 2011. See you all there!

Welcome to Something Lovely! I have been a long time fan of all things design related and after many months of reading and being inspired by other design blogs, I have finally decided to make one of my own! It is here that I will post everything about anything and hopefully inspire all of you, like you have done for me! So sit back on that gorgeous chair of yours (okay, we can pretend it's gorgeous) and relax, because it is going to be a fun ride! I have yet to learn the ins and outs of blogging, but I hope to get better as I go and update my site often! If you have any advice for me please don't hesitate to comment!!

...And now, I will begin my first post with a topic about love affairs (not the kind you're thinking of) but rather, a love affair with colour. Do you ever go through obsessions with colour? A colour that you just can't get enough of? I've noticed just recently, that I have become overly obsessed with all things Grey. I actually think this affair began a few years back when Liv by Aut Lit (a beautiful design store in Toronto) opened up and used greys and whites as their dominant colour pallete. Whether its a simple grey with a hint of ice blue or a gorgeous, rich dark charcoal, there is just something about Grey that makes me smile!

The next few images are interiors from my favourite design store called Maxalto. It is originally from Europe, but you can also find it in Miami. Next time you are down south you must make your way to the design district and check out all the stunning stores (beginning with Maxalto, of course!)
